After a thorough search process to select the candidate with the ideal combination of experience and vision to lead the school district through these unprecedented times and into the future, the board of trustees of the Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District announced that they have selected Dr. Greg Rodriguez as lone finalist for Superintendent of Schools. The selection was made at a special board meeting held on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.
During the selection process, Rodriguez rose to the top of the candidate pool of 29 applicants from across the country. Board President Fernando “Nano” Torres stated, “As a board, we were impressed with Dr. Rodriguez’s diverse leadership and administrative experience, his wealth of knowledge, especially of online educational resources, and the excellent grasp and understanding he had regarding the diverse needs of our district.” He continued, “We look forward to having Dr. Rodriguez implement his vision and plans to continue our district’s success.”
Originally from Texas, Rodriguez has built a distinguished career as a renowned educational leader in various capacities throughout the country. Most recently, he served as Deputy Superintendent of Schools at Waterbury Public Schools in Waterbury, Connecticut. Prior to that, he served as Superintendent in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He also previously served as Deputy Superintendent of Huntsville ISD, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability for San Marcos CISD. Rodriguez earned his bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from Southwest Texas State University, and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Houston Baptist University with a specialization in Instructional Technology. He received his Doctorate in Education with a Concentration in School Improvement from Texas State University – San Marcos.
The different roles he had in various leadership positions, coupled with his formal education in school improvement, has given Rodriguez a unique perspective to understand the many aspects of quality district administration.
Upon the announcement of his selection, which requires a 21-day waiting period by law before being formally named Superintendent, Rodriguez stated, “I thank the board of trustees for their trust and confidence in selecting me as the lone finalist for Superintendent, and I look forward to serving the students and families of the Edcouch-Elsa and Delta Area community.
“We are facing unprecedented challenges with education during this pandemic, and I am committed to ensuring that our employees, students, and families of EEISD will be ready to tackle this opportunity with all the necessary tools and resources needed to be successful,” Rodriguez added.
Rodriguez continued, “This district’s legend precedes itself, with this community’s big heart, persevering spirit, and deep pride that runs through every person who has gone through the district’s school system.”
“I want all district employees, students, and families to know that I will bring to this position the energy, dedication, and commitment that this community deserves, with the highest priority of improving academic achievement by building capacity for quality teaching and learning and uniting our community behind this goal as well,” he stated.
